How I Wore My Sheer Red Dress

The other day, Hubbs and I decided to pop over to Jones Beach (how great are beaches in the off season?) and snap some outfit photos. It was windy and chilly but we had great fun!

I originally planned this outfit around wearing my new Michael Antonio wedges but they were so impossible to walk in that I ditched them for what Hubbs and I call my "nurse" shoes. Can I get three cheers for slouch socks?

I've been meaning to photograph this sheer red dress for a looong time. A Kaboodle friend had mentioned that she wanted to see it a few months ago and, well, I just got around to it.

Better view of the headband. Love it, love the lady who made it for me!

And, because I'm not actually completely insane, I didn't leave the outerwear at home:

Question: Does anyone else find capes hugely annoying when you actually need to carry things? I love them (and they're pretty abundant at tag sales so I've amassed quite a few), but I'm left wondering how to toss my bag over my shoulder without looking like an idiot. Anyone have the secret? So far, my only secret is to wear something else when I'm picking up the groceries, haha.

  1. I usually put the bag over my shoulder under my cape. But that doesn't work for all capes unfortunately. Love this dress and these photos for you!

    1. Ah, yes. Makes sense. I very seldom carry a small bag, so maybe it's actually a bag problem for me.

  2. I love the outfit, but I disagree about the shoe title.Nurse shoes are all about being things you can stand in all day. I could stand in those about 20 minutes--I know it's longer for you

    1. Haha, I wear these all day long on tag sale days (and stand from 8 to 5). Perhaps it would be more accurate to rename them Ali's Nurse Shoes; Sasha's Instruments of Torture.

  3. PS: If anyone has pictures of people wearing bags on their shoulders with capes, I'd love to see them.

    1. :) Thanks, Momma! I said to Eric: Take some wide, off-center shots. And that was the one that turned out best. My hair was all over my face in the rest. Ponytail next time we do the beach.

  7. Beauteous! I love teal and red together. If I had seen those items separately, I might've been skeptical, but you really rocked that shit. Lllove the red dress!

    1. Thank you, Miss D! I feel like they're pretty weird together myself, but you know how I live for that. :)

  9. You are gorgeous!! That red dress is total WOW, and you are brilliant to wear another dress under it. I've had various sheer/lace/crochet dresses over the years and never seem to find the right slip so I let them go. Now I wish I had a couple of those back...

When I wear capes, I always just go for a small handbag (since it's always evening). Not sure what I would do if I actually had to carry something! Big bag on shoulder under cape might get a little huntchbacky...

    1. Yeah, good point. I think I'll just have to wear them on light, casual days. And thanks for the nice comment. You could so rock the sheer dress with underdress look!
